Love thy neighbour? 62% of people aged 55 and over said they trust their neighbours, but only 30% of 16 to 24-year-olds agreed. Apparently, being unsociable with newcomers is also the norm, with only 34% of people surveyed saying they actively welcome new neighbours. These statistics hardly fill you with faith that your neighbours will watch over your property if you’re away so, to buck this trend, it’s a good idea to try and build up a good relationship with those living close to you, Neighborhood Watch can be a great away to increase safety in your local area. Such schemes have a dual effect of increasing safety and community spirit while reducing the incentive for criminals to commit offences in your neighbourhood. Neighbours are encouraged to look out for one another, enhancing communication and cooperation within the community and ultimately reducing crime.
