Beat the burglar’s ‘sophisticated new scam’

Thieves are leaving small stickers on houses to identify them as easy targets. The stickers - which have already been linked to one local burglary - are printed with the words ‘24/7 Locksmith - Repair Installation Locked out' and a fake telephone number of 0203 582 8175.

The police believe a scout is sent to an area to find homes that look like easy targets to burgle, and to see if people are at home during the day. If the scout thinks the home would be easy to break into, they leave a sticker on the door.

By scouting properties it gives the burglar the chance to check out the quality of locks on doors and windows, and plan their route of entry.

If the scout was to be stopped by the police they use the excuse that they are innocently distributing marketing material for the locksmiths firm.

During this time of year burglaries rise by up to 20%, and home are particularly targeted between 3pm and 7pm.

In light of this new scam, home security prevention is more important than ever. By securing your property with locks that meet The British Standard BS3621 burglars will instantly recognise this industry benchmark as the highest quality, safety and performance lock and by having these locks in place they will act as deterrent against burglars.

As well as securing your property with the highest quality locks, statistics show that up to 84% of burglars avoid homes with alarms and 60% of attempted burglaries carried out on properties fitted with them are unsuccessful, making alarms an excellent form of protection and a deterrent for prospective criminals.
